This is the e-mail version of the Journal of Conceptual Modeling (JCM), which is only available online at http://www.inconcept.com/JCM/. Subscribers to this list will receive one mailing per issue (currently, every other month), as well occasional announcements of other new site features. The periodic mailings will contain a table of contents of the new issue as well as brief descriptions of each new issue feature.

To subscribe, send a message to jcm-issues-subscribe@yahoogroups.com or go the group's home page at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jcm-issues. Once you subscribe, you will need to reply to the confirmation message that you will receive.

The JCM Discussion List
The JCM mailing list is a free, moderated list dedicated to conceptual modeling issues including but not limited to: the Journal of Conceptual Modeling (http://www.inconcept.com/JCM), Object Role Modeling (ORM), the Unified Modeling Language (UML), Natural Language Modeling (NLM), CASE tool support, implementation issues, etc.

To subscribe, send a message to jcm-subscribe@yahoogroups.com or go to this e-group's home page at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jcm. Once you subscribe, you will need to reply to the confirmation message that you will receive.

The JCM list is a moderated discussion list for database topics ranging from conceptual modeling techniques (such as ORM), vendor tools (such as Visio/InfoModeler), implementation issues, JCM related feedback and discussions, and other topical subjects.

Any subscribed list member may post or reply. However, to reduce the risk of unsolicited mail from outside parties, the list is currently moderated. This means there will most likely be a short delay (less than 24 hours in most cases) between your posting to the list and its subsequent distribution to the list. Topics deemed inappropriate to the list will be rejected by the moderator. The moderator will not alter your post in any way. List rules can be found in the JCM List Rules section below. List suggestions can be found in the JCM List Suggestions section below.

JCM Author Reminder List
This list is used to remind potential Journal of Conceptual Modeling (http://www.incocnept.com/JCM) authors of upcoming deadlines. You will only receive 1 notification every 2 months approximately one month before the deadline.

To subscribe, send a message to  jcm-authorreminder-subscribe@yahoogroups.com or go to this e-group's home page at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jcm-authorreminder. Once you subscribe, you will need to reply to the confirmation message that you will receive.

To subscribe, send a message to inconcept-pr-subscribe@yahoogroups.com or go to this e-group's home page at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/inconcept-pr. Once you subscribe, you will need to reply to the confirmation message that you will receive.

Subscription Instructions (for all lists)

Step One: Send a blank e-mail to the appropriate e-mail address for the list you wish to subscribe to. Each list has it’s own subscription address, which are listed in the individual list descriptions above.

Step Two: After a few minutes, you should receive a confirmation e-mail. Follow the instructions in that e-mail, but basically, you have to reply to that e-mail in order to confirm that you wish to subscribe. If you do not wish to be subscribed, simply delete the confirmation message; you will not be added unless you reply to the confirmation message. This step ensures that you will not be subscribed to the list without your knowledge.

Step Three: After a few more minutes, you should receive a welcome message for the list you subscribed to. List descriptions and instructions will be in the welcome message.

Disclaimer and Privacy Issues
We are using a free distribution system for these lists. Therefore, we are at the mercy of the company supplying the list. The list provider, Yahoo, puts a small advertisement at the bottom of every post. Further, they also place advertisements on the YahooGroups WWW pages.

It may be possible that at some later date, Yahoo will use your e-mail address to send you advertisements. We don’t believe they currently do this, we don’t believe they will, and they do have privacy statements regarding the distribution of your address on their website, but the possibility is always there. Therefore, InConcept assumes no responsibility for any actions taken by Yahoo.

InConcept promises to regard your information with confidentiality, and will not use your address for any purpose other than the purposes for which the list is intended. We will not or sell or give your address or other submitted information to any one else. Further, unless you have subscribed to the InConcept Press Release List, InConcept will not use any of the information you supply send you any direct advertisements. For more information, please see the InConcept Privacy Statement.

JCM Discussion List Rules
The list is meant to be an open exchange of ideas and, indeed, participation from as many people as possible is encouraged. However, in dealing with a diverse set of people, certain ground rules need to be established. These rules are not meant to censor anybody or control content. Really, they are mostly common sense and a subset of "netiquette". Many of the things listed below are not even expected to be a problem as we are all professionals. However, many of these problems are common on newsgroups and other forums or lists, and this is a public list, so these rules are posted just to make sure.

1) No unsolicited advertisements for products or services will be allowed. This is often a sticky area with most discussion lists. Unsolicited means "asked for". If someone posts a message requesting advice on a company or service, recommendations for such products or services are acceptable. Also, since the technology of conceptual modeling is not exactly implemented by a number of vendors, discussions of tools may seem "one-sided". This isn’t so much endorsement of a particular product as it is a reality of the market. Further, vendor evaluation type discussions are encouraged, but only in the context of a fair evaluation. By this, I’m getting at: vendor representatives shouldn’t constantly post messages with the sole purpose of marketing, bashing their competitors, or just posting the latest press release (unless it was asked for or is otherwise topical). As was stated above, this is a sticky area often determined by the group itself, so what is acceptable and what isn’t will often flex a bit. When in doubt, make an offer such as "We can talk about this via private e-mail".

2) "SPAM" is not allowed. SPAM is unsolicited commercial or off-topic material. This list is not the appropriate place to talk about multi-level marketing schemes, adult web sites, or other "pass this on to everyone you know" types of messages. You shouldn’t try to sell your car or computer in this list, warn fellow readers of so-called virus alerts (such as the hoax "Good Times" virus), or pass along chain letters.

3) No offensive language or content. The purpose of this list is to foster communication which becomes difficult if people get offended. Watch your language, don't talk about politics, religion, or social issues that do not relate to list topics. Basically, use the same decorum you would in a business/office setting.

4) "Flaming" is not allowed. This list is not the place to wage personal attacks on other list members. If you disagree with a person or post, do it politely. "Trolling" is not allowed either. Trolling would be something like posting a message with the intent of only annoying other members. For example, posting a message that says something like "ORM sux", without making rational arguments as to why, with the sole intent of getting other list members to argue with you.

5) Remember that e-mail doesn’t always reflect the context of what you are trying to say. A post intended to use humor, sarcasm, and/or irony not always be obvious. Therefore, we recommend you either refrain from making such remarks, or indicate the tone of your words. One way of indicating your tone is to use "emoicons" such as smiley faces ( : ) ) or:

(g) = grin
(s) = "smile"
(b) = big, such as (bg) or "big grin"
(e) = evil, such as (eg) or "evil grin"
(lol) = "laugh out loud"
(duck) = "duck" as in a good-natured jest
etc.

We encourage a fun atmosphere, but remember that your audience doesn’t always understand the tone of your message that they would in person (as your body language reflects a tone that the written word doesn’t).

6) Keep on topic. While the topics change and expand over time, this is not the place to talk about cars, politics, TV, movies, and etc.

7) Don’t use attachments. Not everyone will be using an e-mail reader that allows attachments. Further, posting attachments can cause excessive burden on the list server. If you want to share files, post them via the web, FTP, or offer to e-mail them individually. Your moderator may be willing (space constraints may be a problem, but short term file space is possible) to set up a file section from the JCM site as well.

8) If replying to a message, include the portion (and only the portion) relevant to your comments. Please do not include the entire message if it doesn’t directly relate to your comments. However, please do include the portion you are replying to, as it is often difficult to remember the past posts in which you may be referring.

9) Please use text based e-mail rather that HTML based e-mail when sending messages to the list. Not everyone has (or desires) the option to read their e-mail in HTML format. Therefore, your message may appear "as garbage" (with visible HTML tags throughout the message).

JCM List suggestions

  1. Use a spell checker.
  2. Participate, don’t just "lurk". We all have valuable experiences to share. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or otherwise participate.
  3. Cite sources where applicable.
  4. Spread the word about the JCM and the JCM lists to people who would be interested. The more people, the better the content and participation.
